Claudia visited two of the Graduate Fashion Week universities in May in preparation for her involvement as one of the River Island Gold Award judges this month.
ABOUT THE BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN COURSE AT WESTMINSTER
The BA Fashion Design course at Westminster has a proud history of producing exceptional fashion graduates. Whether working in Menswear, Womenswear, Sportswear, or in the areas of styling, accessories or fashion journalism our graduates have emerged into the fashion industry and made their mark, helping to shape the global fashion industry with their vision, drive and ambition.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER
Claudia Schiffer, Terry Mansfield, Chairman Graduate Fashion Week and Richard Bradbury, CEO River Island join Andrew Groves BA Fashion Design Course Director and Nigel Luck (stood up in grey T shirt), Senior Design Tutor, BA Fashion Design, to do a series of toile reviews with the students.  They were joined by outside experts the stylist Richard Sloan, and Lulu Kennedy from Fashion East.

Awen Teifi – Both pictures left
Awen has created a collection in suede, linen, toile foiled bronze and leather.  Last year she also worked as a design assistant to the designers Boudicca and Peter Jensen on their runway collections.

The collection also consists of sculptural shoulder and waist accessories in leather wood veneer and mirror.  Awen has been nominated for the Mulberry Accessory Award.

Katie Wagstaff - Katie’s collection is based around old postcards of Victorian ladies bathing at the seaside. Fabrics include laser cut leather, striped deckchair cottons, candy striped chiffons, and Katie has an interest in designing within the area fine lingerie after graduation

UCCA (UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF THE CREATIVE ARTS) EPSOM
Claudia was met by Adrien Parry-Roberts, Course Leader Fashion.
Claudia then met tutors and students from the different courses - BA Hons fashion Journalism, BA Hons Fashion Promotion & Imaging, BA Hons Fashion Management & Marketing, BA Hons Fashion Design Enterprise Pathway.  Giving Claudia an overview of what the fashion offer is at Epsom. 
The Group then walked around the studio and met the final year students on the BA Hons Fashion Design Innovation Pathway, (the students that are preparing catwalk looks for GFW) they were at their workstations doing research, toiles and pattern cutting.

RIVER ISLAND VISIT
Claudia was met by Richard Bradbury, CEO River Island and Sarah Walter, Head of Fashion Communications, who made initial introductions and outlined the company background
Claudia was then introduced to 6 ex graduates (see below) who are now working in the River Island business
This was followed by a tour around the buying and design floors to look at how the business operates and how all the roles interact, and to understand some of different types of positions available to many graduates amongst major brands and retail groups
